REFLECTIONS ON MY SERVICE-LEARNING COMPONENT

The effectiveness of my project:

This project was effective in many different ways, due to it affecting both the learners and the teachers in different manners. Mental health awareness in schools has proven to vital due to it affecting the well-being and academic success of students. This initative acknowledges that mental health is as crucial as physical health, and provides students with the necessary tools to navigate their emotions, stressors, and challenges. Implementing mental health awareness programs decreases mental health issues. By openly discussing topics like anxiety, depression, and stress management, students learn that seeking help is not a sign of weakness but an act of self-care. This initative encourages learners to reach out for support, and therefore reduces the risk of untreated mental health conditions within the classroom and overall school setting. Within my project itself, mental health awareness and appreciating all individuals which assist us within the school are both vital in ensuring that all individuals feel like their best selves even in the hardest of times. Mental Health awareness is not only for those who struggle on the daily, but also for those who are unsure what they are feeling and why - this initiative allows for people to be aware of things around them and have methods in place to assist them, so they can get the help they need and then suuceed in all aspects of their life - both inside and outside of the school.

How this service learning changed and developed me personally:

Personally this service learning was a great learning opportunity into how all individuals feel on the daily basis, and really opened my mind into how there are so many ways in which a single person can help another person with their struggles, simply by being understanding and kind. Prioritizing mental health is important for overall well-being. It affects every aspect of our lives, from our relationships to our work or academic performance. When individuals receive proper support and care for their mental health, they are better equipped to handle stress, build resilience, and lead fulfilling lives. Addressing mental health concerns early can prevent them from turning into more severe issues. It also creates an environment which is more empathetic and understanding within society, reducing the stigma surrounding mental health challenges. Mental Health awareness is not only for psychologists, but instead it is so vital for both teachers and learners to be aware of these challenges so that all individuals can be supported equally.

Personally this service learning taught me how to be more open and kind towards all individuals, due to the fact that no one really understands what everyone around them is going through. People need to learn to be better listeners and not always seek to be the one to speak, and this initiative has really taught me the importance of taking the time to listen to those around me, as people who need help dont always ask for it but simply show they need help in more silent manners.

The benefit of this initiative to the school and its sustainability:

Introducing mental health awareness in schools makes way for many benefits for learners, teachers, and the broader community. Firstly, it decreases the stigmus surrounding mental health issues, creating an atmosphere of understanding and empathy both inside and outside the school environment. This encourages open conversations about emotions, stressors, and seeking help when needed. Equipping students with mental health knowledge and coping strategies empowers them to navigate challenges effectively. Techniques like mindfulness and self-reflection, not only enhance their mental well-being but also contribute to improved focus and academic performance. Students who are mentally healthy are more engaged learners. Early and continuous upport regarding mental health, can prevent minor issues from turning into more serious mental health conditions. It teaches learners to take proactive steps in managing their emotional well-being.

Within this school itself, there are many learners who come from many different family situations - many of which children have gone through things such as COVID, where they have lost family members, parents, and siblings. Children need to learn how to deal with their emotions and speak to others who can help them in order to deal with the feelings which arise from hurtful situations such as these. This initiative not only allows for learners to hear about the importance of mental health, and understanding what it is, but it also allows for learners who need help to know where and how they can seek and receieve help based off of their emotions. Learners need to feel safe and heard, and this project has opened a door for learners to know they are being heard and looked out for within the school.

I enjoyed the topic that you chose to do your service-learning on, Amy-Leigh. Mental health is such an important aspect of all our lives and deserves to be taken as seriously as everything else. Reading your blog, showed me how involved you are willing to be in school activities and drives. There is no water you will not cross for anyone you love - including the school and your learners. Your service-learning had a very powerful meaning and I thoroughly loved reading all about it! Congratulations on such a special good deed! 🌷💛
